Red vs. Blue

I don’t watch CNN. I don’t watch Fox News. I can’t tell you the names of every cabinet member and I don’t know what bill is being debated on Capital Hill today.

I’m not affiliated with any political party.

Perhaps I should, but the truth is, I just don’t pay much attention to politics.

But I do pay attention to people.

And the trend of people in this country towards political polarization is unsettling. More and more people are entrenched on their side of the aisle. Suited up in Red or Blue and prepared to fight to the death to prove to the world that their side is right. And perhaps more importantly, that the other side is wrong.

Last week, leading up to the Kavenaugh hearing, it was evident that a great number of people had already decided whether or not he was guilty. There seemed to be no middle ground.

On one hand Bret Kavenaugh was a vile, disgusting man with a long history of getting drunk and preying upon unsuspecting women. Hang the sonofabitch by his balls!

On the other hand, Christine Blasey-Ford was a lying troublemaker who was clearly making the whole thing up to suit her agenda. And she’s on the Democrat’s payroll for God’s sake!

But there was no evidence either way. Even now we have very little evidence upon which to make a decision but last week there was literally none. There was one woman saying that something happened and one man saying that it didn’t, each with a smattering of ancillary people supporting them who may or may not have been telling the truth.

Just some people making statements about things that may or may not have happened 36 years ago. That was it; that was all we had to go on.

What was most striking to me about the whole thing is that everyone seemed to pick their side based on their political party. I’m sure there are exceptions but this was certainly the case for anyone I talked to who had an opinion on the matter.

My republican friends were certain that it’s, at best, a case of mistaken identity. And quite possibly Blasey-Ford is part of a conspiracy.

My democrat friends were positive that Kavanaugh did it. And probably did the same thing to other women because he seemed like the type.

I have said many times over the years, half jokingly, that our political parties will destroy our country from the inside. When I see this sort of blind allegiance I wonder if, perhaps, it’s not a matter to joke about.
