The number of foreclosures in North Carolina fell 14.9 percent in April from the same period last year, according to RealtyTrac Inc.

The state had 3,082 foreclosures in April, with one in every 1,339 homeowners receiving a default notice, auction-sale notice or bank-repossession filing.

North Carolina ranked 34th in the nation for foreclosure filings in the latest quarter.

Foreclosure filings in North Carolina rose 55.9 percent in April from March.

Across the country, foreclosure filings rose 32 percent in April from a year ago.

There were 342,038 foreclosure filings nationwide, which affected one in every 374 U.S. households.

Nevada, Florida and California posted the top foreclosure rates last month.

Filings rose 0.25 percent in April from March.

Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac tracks default notices, auction-sale notices and bank repossessions. Its figures exceed those compiled by the N.C. Commissioner of Banks. The company counts every foreclosure filing, including multiple filings for a single household. The commissioner counts each household only once, regardless of the number of filings it receives.
